A superb start to the presentations of 2025 with Tenby members Paul Richards and Liz Wallis captivating a full house !
Their new presentation, fresh off the camera and computer was titled ‘Winter Adventures in Scandinavia” . And what adventures they were……
The talk documented four winter trips to Northern Norway, where the conditions were incredibly harsh, down to -30 C, as they were high above in the Arctic Circle.
The talk had exceptional images, peppered with video clips, capturing the stark and beautiful land of Norway .
While planning the trips they had a wish list of things they wanted to see & do. Just one was not achieved but next time …..However they saw King Eider Ducks, the Northern Lights, Cranes in the snow, and the highlight, Musk Ox up in the highest snow covered peaks.
Travelling around the country proved to be hazardous and difficult with vast amounts of snow and ice, extremely low temperatures to be contended with .
Bird life was plentiful with cliffs packed with kittiwakes, well camouflaged ptarmigans, striking eider ducks, purple sandpipers, cranes dancing in the snow and great crested grebes courting ! Arctic Hares out in the snow and Reindeer too.
They both had a wonderful time sledding with huskies, spending time understanding the way of life for the local people in such a harsh environment. Dog National Sled racing and the controversy that followed proved to be interesting .
Their great wish was to see Musk Ox and they camped! In snow, in temperatures of -25C with few home comforts - well actually none! However the resulting images of the musk oxen , an animal of the ice age , were outstanding. Truly a special time for Liz & Paul and for us too.
They picked up a cruise with some luxury back to Bergen, showing us some wonderful landscapes .
The evening was packed with breathtaking images and Paul and Liz freely shared their expertise on camera settings, camera gear and it’s care in low temperatures, wildlife behaviour and planning how to get the shot you desire. And to follow your dreams ……..

Tenby & District Camera Club enjoyed a special presentation this week. Steven Clarey who is from Carmarthen but lives in Tenby, enthralled his audience with stunning photography & video. His story telling accompanying the images was amusing, informative and interesting . His approach and work ethic for photography was refreshing.
When he took a degree course in Film and Media at Trinity St David, he discovered a passion for the creativity of photography.
His interests include Motorsport, Rally Cross, Water Sports and many other action sports, so his career took him in that direction. Over the years he has been employed by many major companies, including Ford, camera companies including Panasonic and specialist magazines. His skills to get “that special shot” for himself & a company are impressive. It does put him under substantial pressure which then dissolves when he sees the resulting images or film.
His surfing shots were exceptional ! He survived a cyclone in Mozambique while out there filming, recounting the worry about surviving and seeing the damage.
Currently Steven spends much of his time in Switzerland working with The House of Drones , developing further skills in Drone photography. An excellent evening with a very happy audience appreciating Steven’s talents.

31st October: Presentation by John Archer Thompson
What an interesting presentation! For their 31st October evening, Tenby & District Camera Club welcomed John Archer Thompson. He shared his local knowledge of the coastal geology of Pembrokeshire, its history, myths and legends with super photography. John is a freelance coastal ecologist, tutor, writer and photographer. This shone through with his knowledge of the rock structures of the Pembrokeshire coast laced with Welsh folklore in his commentary.
John’s talk began with a simple explanation of the geology of Pembrokeshire, the timescales and how the coast and land developed in the past. The landscape is ancient with nearly all the rocks underlying its land surface formed before the end of the Carboniferous period some 290 million years ago. The oldest date back 600 million years. North Pembrokeshire is really old and the south much younger. We were taken on a journey from the Northern coast down to St Brides. The next section to the south coast will be in John’s next talk in February.
Visiting Strumble, Porthgain, St.David’s, Porthclais, Solva and Newgale we were shown excellent landscape photography taken in stunning light conditions. John explained the geology of this journey from the rare maritime heathlands to glacial river valleys and much more.
Information on farming, hedgerows, lichens, building materials, new sea technology, tides and settlements provided extra interest .
John was warmly thanked and we look forward to his next presentation early next year.
A Halloween raffle, organised by Ali Rees, was a great success. Thank you Ali for your hard work. Many thanks to everyone who purchased tickets and congratulations to Jan Sullivan who was the winner of the fabulous prize. Many thanks to everyone who play a part in making the evening a success.

We welcomed Allen back to Tenby Camera Club tonight . He is a popular speaker with stunning skills as photographer, both technically and artistically. Allen divided the evening into 4 separate presentations with the link between them being an extremely high standard of photography.
The first section was on the wildlife and landscapes of Iceland, moving through the seasons. Birds in their breeding colours, pink foot geese, turnstones, eider, golden plover and red throated divers to name just a few. Seals and arctic fox too. Waterfalls, beaches and mountains, lakes, churches and flowers through the seasons. And then there were the Northern lights, sunrises and sunsets. Autumn colours, snow, heavy seas and mirror lakes were all featured. Just stunning work, capturing the essence of Iceland.
Part 2 was a short appreciation of Preserved Steam Trains. Allen explained good places to visit to see the trains with full steam . The images were taken over a long period of time, most not digital including colour slides and film. Advice was given on times to take the most atmospheric shots, especially at nighttime. We were taken on a journey from Didcot to Seven Valley Railway , Scotland, Newport and Devon.
After a break, Allen demonstrated and talked about Drone Photography. He had 2 drones for us to look at and he advised on regulations as a drone photographer. There was a lot of interest and questions on this subject . An AV show of drone images was shown, giving a completely different viewpoint of popular locations. Castles, bridges, lakes and industrial areas were shown.
The last section was an AV with commentary from Allen on Starry Landscapes with wonderful photos of the milky way, star groups , star trails and meteor showers, Photos taken in the moonlight were beautiful. 10th October Local Speaker …..Alun Crockford
Tenby Camera Club had the pleasure of hosting Alun Crockford , a Tenby born & bred professional photographer. He started his career with the Tenby Observer and then went on to become a professional photographer after graduation. One of his ambitions was to hold an exhibition in Tenby and his presentation was to show how he achieved his goal .
Alun wanted to photograph local people who had contributed to Tenby’s rich and diversified culture. And so it began , sponsored by the Arts Council of Wales & funded by the National Lottery it was held in Tenby Museum & Art Gallery.
He was soon photographing people in their comfort zone environment . Alun used specialist equipment which produced portraits with even light. The process took a year to complete .
Alun demonstrated the use of his specialist camera gear and displayed stunning prints.
Alun also showed members a selection of photographs rescued from a skip when the well known Tenby Photographer Graham Hughes studio closed down . A trip down memory lane for many members with Alun preserving Tenby’s rich heritage for future generations.
Warm thanks were given to Alun for such an interesting presentation.

21st March 2024…… Mike Perry
Tenby and District Camera, Club hosted the renown, environmental Photographer Mike Perry to
present his view of Wales and its beautiful land and seascapes.
Mike from North Pembrokeshire is well known in the field of environmental photography,
exhibiting his work in many of the leading exhibition houses throughout Wales and Europe.
Mike, originally from London, when in his late 30s, he moved from London to North
Pembrokeshire. He is a member of Greenpeace and is regularly seen on Channel 4.
In the early days of his photographic career, he acquired a 10 x 8 plate camera, he loves Shooting
in softlight, and in 2002, he photographed a series of images, which he termed Beach 1 - 27,
which sold well in London and the USA and featured in exhibitions throughout Europe. Using his
plate camera, he captured superb images throughout, presenting the beach series as both
individual images and a grid format, which proved very popular.
He related some of the problems using the large format plate camera.
Many of his exhibitions featured images outlining the startling statistics of how much micro
plastic is in our oceans, farmland, and wild life. 95% of seagulls have plastic in their gut. A
frightening realisation.
Thank you Mike Perry for such a different but interesting presentation.
14th March 2024 Workshop
Tenby & District Camera Club held a workshop on how to take an image through the post
processing system to the output and final print. We are grateful to Charlie Kidd for showing us the
method he uses to achieve the many brilliant images he creates.
Starting with downloading his images into Lightroom, sharpening, lens correction, colour
correction, contrast control, cropping, composition, adjustments to lighting, shadows and
highlights, burning and lighting areas that need tweaking, and much more.
The second half of the evening was just as interesting, Alistair Mackay demonstrated the art of
mounting the finished print. It can cost a lot of money to buy some of the equipment on the
market, but Alistair demonstrated how, we could use basic materials and a budget cutting kit, that
did the job fine. It’s all in the technique he insisted, warning us to use the correct masking tape,
with recommendations on where to buy the kits and boards locally and at a keen price.
Thank you to both Charlie and Alistair for all the effort they put into preparing the evening.

Carl Downing …Sports and Wildlife
Tenby & District Camera Club welcomed Carl Downing tonight, Carl, who comes from Newport
Gwent ,what an excellent presenter, with an impressive background of photography.
Carl was a pioneer of digital photography in the early days, buying a small digital camera and
attaching a telescope to the lens to take photos of wildlife. It wasn’t easy to take moving images
and he had to pre focus on where he thought the subject would land, but he produced some
stunning images. He managed to photograph a very rare humming bird while in Columbia, it was
400meters away, but with his combination of camera and telescope, captured a winning image
that was published & gained an award. It was pirated by a Florida magazine, Carl sued them, and
pocketed enough cash to “up his game” and buy a brand new kit of lenses and cameras. He
never looked back, and went on to travel around the world photographing wildlife in South Africa,
Brazil, and eventually running wildlife tours in Columbia, a very experienced photographer,
speaking fluent Spanish as well.
Eventually he returned to Wales, and expanded his love of photography to the sporting scene, he
had a friend who had taken photos at Olympics events and introduced him to the world of sports.
Carl, a keen cyclist and having the velodrome in the Newport area, a natural path for such an
accomplished photographer, practising his technique on the young hopefuls that were training
there,
Carl gained a Sport Accreditation and enjoys the prime spots now, he regularly photographs the
top cyclists.
Carl was enthusiastic and inspiring , offering advice on technique and preparation.

8th February Les Loosemore
Tenby & District Camera Club had the good fortune to have Les Loosemore for his excellent presentation of a “Night with Les” and what an excellent night it was.
Les stepped in at the last minute, because we were let down by a presenter at short notice. We were very grateful to him, and what a show he put on for us,
Les is an ambassador for “Fotospeed” and prints all his own photos. The quality of his images is outstanding. He started with a display of panoramas, and then Waterfalls, Scotland, Trees , Landscape, and concluded with Portraits. After each display he invited the audience to closely inspect the photos, ask questions and critique them to see if they could find any faults.
A truly inspiring evening that had audience participation, just what a camera club needs.
Les introduced a friend he brought with him, Riccardo Beghini and during the tea break Riccardo, displayed his brilliant landscape Photos, they were amazing, he answered all the questions we asked, and proved to be a potentially great presenter, one of his ambitions.

22nd February John Archer -Thomson Skomer Below and Above
John Archer-Thomson is a freelance coastal ecologist, photographer, writer and tutor, and a former deputy head of the Field Studies Council's Dale Fort Field Centre in Pembrokeshire.
He has visited Skomer many times, both on land and underwater for many years . His knowledge of botany, zoology, geology and ornithology was superb and he answered questions with ease.
His photographic skills were also of the highest quality, so we were treated to some stunning images of the landscape and life of Skomer .
He explained the history of the Islands, from their geographic formation to farming practices through the years, and what impact all these have had on the story and flourishment up the present day.
It is amazing how such a small island can be such a plethora of life. John showed a wide range of photos capturing the different categories of bird life from land birds to seabirds including puffins, fulmars, manx shearwaters, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, owls, sedge warblers and all the gull family .
The animal life was not neglected either with dolphin, skomer voles, seals and rabbits featured.
John filled the talk with tales of the lifestyles of all these occupants, all done with humour and enthusiasm .
The floral displays were not neglected either with fantastic images showing the bluebells, thrift, campion, bracken and scurvy grass that cover the island .
We were also treated to a tour of the underwater world around Skomer that is rich in life with great diversity and rarity. Sponges, sea slugs, fish, crabs, tube worms, anemones, corals and seaweeds were just a hint of what is there. An exciting landscape so different to above water .
An enthralling evening for everyone .
Tenby & District Camera Club had the good fortune to have Les Loosemore for his excellent presentation of a “Night with Les” and what an excellent night it was.

Gareth Martin A Taste Of Wales
On Thursday Evening 1st February , we warmly welcomed the return of Gareth Martin to deliver his talk “ A Taste of Wales” Gareth is a very active Camera Club Member of several clubs and runs a variety of Facebook pages and competitions. Gareth has a unique style of presenting his excellent work by recounting anecdotes of the situations at the time . His amusing storytelling had us chuckling throughout ! His love of photography and Wales go hand in hand and is very clear to see.
We were treated to a tour around Wales from Capel Curig to Port Talbot but It was not only landscapes shown . Gareth said there is a photograph to be taken in most situations and he certainly showed that ! There were streets, people, houses, quarries , churches, the odd toilet, captured unusually with different angles and in colour and monochrome . It was good to see the difference when viewing the same photo in colour , black and white and also sepia and with grain .
Gareth also gave us a preview of his new Mono Talk hot off the press. Images with clever simplicity and style but thought provoking. Good examples to learn from that less can be more .
This talk certainly looks good .

He and She battle 4th April
He/She Battle change of date.
We have had to re-arrange the He/She Battle date again and it will now take place on Thursday 4th April with the 21st of March reverting to a Workshop as it was originally.
We will be looking for 28 PDI Open images from each team. The judge will be asked to award a Best Image but no other placing and no scores. They will be advised to give ‘kind’ critique only for the images on the night and to maintain the fun expectation of the evening.
There will be more information to come as we approach the competition and I am sure that Rob Cox and Jan Sullivan will be chasing everyone for their image(s) in the coming weeks.
