22nd March
Tenby Camera Club News

There was a good attendance on Thursday 21st March for the judging of the 3rd Open Competition . Fourteen photographers entered their work to be considered with a pleasing and interesting range of topics. Members welcomed WPF judge Leigh Woolford to take on the difficult task of critiquing and marking the images. Leigh gave a deceptively casual approach to his judging . His relaxed style still packed a punch when necessary . His comments were constructive and practical, showing where simple improvements could be made both in camera and post processing .

There were 18 prints entered, a wide range of wildlife photos but landscapes and portraits too. Leigh found it difficult to choose the final placings but eventually gave 1st place to Neil Thomas , scoring 20/20, with “Osprey Homeward Bound”. 2nd place also with 20/20 was given to Cheryl Hewitt for her “Sanderling” . In third spot with 19/20 was “The Jackal Returns” by Jan Sullivan.

After the break, there were 26 digital entries with a full range of topics to be enjoyed. In 1st place with 20/20 was Roy Peters with a travel style image “ On the way home”. In 2nd also with 20/20 was Charlie Kidd with “Sparrowhawk with tail end”. Third placing was given to Lizzie Wallis, 19/20 was scored for “ Travelling in the doorway”

Warm thanks were given to Leigh for his helpful advice and attention to detail.

Next week it is The Tenby Camera Club’s AGM .
7th and 14th March
TENBY CAMERA CLUB NEWS

Tenby Camera Club has had two interesting weeks recently.

On the 7th March a large contingent of members travelled to Carmarthen to support Tenby Camera Club. The event was a 4 way photographic battle organised by the Carmarthen Photographic Society . The four clubs were Tenby, New Quay, Cardigan and the hosts, Carmarthen . Each club provided ten digital images for appraisal . Tenby’s images were from 10 different photographers so the members were well represented. The judge with the difficult task of critiquing and scoring forty images was Gary Shinner. A well qualified and experienced circuit judge , Gary gave each image a fair and considerate assessment . It was a close contest at half time, but after a tempting buffet kindly provided by Carmarthen, things got interesting.

Tenby’s final images scored well , earning three out of the five 20’s given on the night. These top scoring images were provided by Paul Richards, Dave Lewis and Charlie Kidd. This was enough to tip the balance and for Tenby to capture first place. There were some excellent and interesting photographs from all the clubs. Final places were Tenby in first, New Quay in second, Cardigan in third and Carmarthen fourth. A very enjoyable evening sharing a mutual love of photography. Many thanks from Tenby members to Carmarthen for being friendly and generous hosts.

The 14th March Club meeting was a 3 table workshop where three experienced members shared their broad knowledge of Photoshop and Lightroom photographic techniques. They were Dave Marriott ,Gill Mackay and Dave Bolton. Members were asked to bring in digital images, so they could be shown how it is possible to vastly improve them from the RAW image. Lots of hints and tips for everyone, always room to learn something new. Many warm thanks to Dave, Gill & Dave for their mettle and patience. It boosts the morale of the less experienced members to have the resolve to improve and “have a go”.

Next week on the 21st March there is the judging of the 3rd Open Competition. Guests warmly welcomed . Check us out on the Tenby Camera Club Website.
28th February
On the 28th February Tenby Camera Club welcomed a popular judge, Gareth Martin . Gareth is a well qualified photographer & judge, a member of several South Wales Camera Clubs. He has a liking & experience in Monochrome work so we were very fortunate to have Gareth as our “ Mono Competition” judge.

Gareth throughout the evening kept us entertained with his gentle humour. His critique was delivered in a practical and considerate manner.

There were 27 prints to be assessed …..topics very varied from portraits and landscapes to wildlife and flowers.
In first place with full marks of 20 was “Feeling the Pain” by Gill Mackay, an ironman capture. Gill Mackay also had second place with “The Concourse” scoring 19 points. Roy Peters had third place with “The Engine Driver” , scoring 19 points.

There were 35 digital entries, what a lot for Gareth to critique.

In first place was Al Rees with “This is all you’re getting from us” . A lovely portrait of two young girls ,scoring 20 points. There were three more 20’s given. In second place “Dropping the food” by Charlie Kidd, third with “Loving life” by Al Rees and 4th place Jan Sullivan’s “The Forgotten Toy” .

Next week there is no meeting in St. Florence, members will be supporting the club at The Carmarthen Camera Club’s “Battle” . Good luck !
21st February
On the 21st February we were awaiting the announcement of the results of our new competition “ The Hexagon” . The creator and organiser of this competition was Dave Marriott who revealed the scores .
Overall winner, winning the new Hexagon trophy was Dave Bolton, who also won the sport and creative categories. In second place was Al Rees. In third place was Charlie Kidd who also won the Portrait section.
Roy Peters won the Nature section, Jan Hornett won the Architecture section and Dave Marriott the Landscape section.
Members gave their thanks to Dave Marriott for organising this new and well received event.

After all the excitement we were treated to a journey around the world by member Mike Cullis. Mike is currently working with Panasonic using the Lumix G9 so we were shown a preview of images taken on two of his most recent trips experimenting with that camera.

Before Christmas Mike had a special trip to the the Falkland Islands. Penguins, seals and albatross in fantastic natural settings enthralled us all.

Mike had just returned from a trip to Kenya, exploring The Maasai Mara. There were fantastic photos of much of the beautiful wildlife found there from lions, giraffes, black rhino, hippo, leopard and elephants.

After this taster of future talks, Mike carried on with his “Raw China” talk. This was not your usual touristy travelogue lecture . It was a behind the scenes tour, revealing the lifestyle for the Chinese people. Showing how dynamic an environment it is, with a massive landmass, Mike captured the expressions and habits of ordinary people. Images of architecture, bridges, shopping malls to recreational areas. weddings , hot air balloon flights, bamboo river rafts ….and then there were the pandas (and the ahhs from the audience ) , the lakes, rivers and mountains . A very interesting and charismatic country made special with Mike’s talented photography. A special thank you was given to Mike from members, for his interesting talk.
Creative Comp
Another great night at Tenby & District Camera Club, it was judging the Creative Competition, we had the best creative judge in wales, Harry Gardiner, now I know why Harry is a 5 star rated judge, he was excellent at critiquing our entires giving sound advice and recommendations on improving the images, backed with ways on improving the impact an image.
Dave Bolton won the Print Trophy, with his brilliant print of Tenby’s Lifeboat battling the elements in a very choppy sea.
The Digital Image Trophy was won by Ray Hine, for his excellent image of the spectrum of colours that result when a plastic ruler is twisted and under stress.
The competition was based on a Creative Theme, and Harry was looking for evidence of that in his choice of winners.
After the judging Harry showed us a series of images that outlined the concept of creativity, thereby demonstrating good practice, which is what he was looking for in judging the competition.
Another enjoyable evening, many thanks Harry, and to all our members for supporting the event
31st January
Many thanks to Gill Mackay for an excellent presentation tonight, 22 members braved the weather, and were treated to a very entertaining and interesting evening, Gill started by giving us an insight into the The Ironman event held in Pembrokeshire, one of the most popular Ironman venues in the UK, mainly because of the welcome the spectators give the contestants and our beautiful surroundings.
Gill outlined her day, crammed with photographing all three of the disciplines. Starting at 7am with the Swimming event, explaining the difficulties of getting in the right place to get the best shot, then the cycle race, getting into the best advantage point to capture the most interesting shots, and then getting back to the finish line to record those exhausted Athletes with elation on their faces, they have finished.
Gill’s photos of the Ironman story over the years have won her many accolades for the quality of her work, both technical and aesthetically and have been accepted in lots of prestigious salons, gaining her many distinctions.
After the break, Gill continued to entertain us by showing her expertise in Street Photography, with her prize winning images from around Europe, including Portugal, Croatia and many others.
A very interesting event, thought provoking, inspirational and encouraging us to get out there and take photographs.
Thank you Gill we all enjoyed the evening, and thank you Alistair for running the projection.
Brian Jennings 2019 Trophy
We had a lovely welcome tonight at TATA Steel works for the Brian Jennings 2019 Trophy.

A really good night. Please find score sheet below. Thank you

Gary Jenkins
Tenby & District Camera Club

I have the sad duty to announce the passing of our good friend and esteemed photographer Gary Jenkins.

Gary was one of Tenby’s best, he specialised in photographing the most difficult of subjects. He loved taking dragonflies but also took general wildlife and astro photography. The images he produced were of an excellent quality whatever the subject and gained many 20’s for our club at external competitions over the years. He recently gained his EFIAP and DPAGB at Pontefract.

He was very knowledgeable on post processing and gave several talks to our club on Lightroom and Photoshop. He almost single handed ran our Summer School last year as well as being a valued committee member, our Secretary and Webmaster.

Gary bravely fought his illness over the last few months, but after several operations unfortunately, died on Saturday morning.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Sarah and their family. Gary will be sorely missed at our club.

TENBY CAMERA CLUB NEWS

Tenby Camera Club has enjoyed the last 2 weeks starting with an excellent talk on the 17th January . Graham Harries of “gphotography” visited the club to deliver his talk “What I Do”. Graham who is from Llanelli, has good experience photographing weddings, concerts, sports, food and all sorts of events . He sells his work to magazines, agencies and as stock photos. He is a member of the Llanelli Photographic Society.

Though the years he has photographed many household names including Girls Aloud, Meatloaf, Bry-an Ferry & Lesley Garrett. He & his wife have been shortlisted as one of the top 5 Wedding Photogra-phers in West Wales at the Welsh National Wedding Awards.

Running through a wide range of photographs, Graham emphasised you must develop your own style, try not to take photos in a particular way just to enter competitions. He wanted to inspire us to do something different. Graham has an interest in derelict buildings, particularly from World War 2. There were many shots of unusual ruins taken in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.
Also covered was his style of Urban Photography, honed well from entering the London based “photo 24” competition. This is a continuous 24 hour photo marathon with hourly challenges.

His new interest is drone photography . It was great to see images of familiar locations with a different aspect.

Two short videos were shown at the end, of Iceland and of Chernobyl. Graham tried to encourage us to use video more to capture movement and sound . He had authorised access to the Chernobyl area so the video of that was very thought provoking ….but this will be a future talk !

On the 24th January we held an internal mini competition . Members can enter 4 digital images on the chosen subject Portraiture . The audience then score the images to place the first 5 images, There was a full range of subjects , children, dogs, gritty male faces, soft looking beautiful women and a cat to name a few !

The results were,in first place Cheryl Hewitt with “Face of Memories” , a local army veteran from the second World War taken at Wings over Carew. Second was “Lara” by Jo Wakeman a very pretty child and third was Dave Bolton with a beautifully exposed image of a dog . Other placings were Jo Wakeman in 4th , Cheryl Hewitt in 5th and Al Rees and Ray Hornett sharing joint 6th.

We were then lucky to have a session of comments from member & WPF judge Harry Gardiner . He chose several images from the entries to explain why it may have done well, how it could be improved . Images which provoked emotion did well with a mixed audience. We also had member Gill MacKay advising on post production work which may help an image . We were fortunate to have 2 experienced members helping with the development of skills . Many thanks to them both.

Next week on the 31st January, we have Gill MacKay giving her maiden talk about Ironman photog-raphy , panning and Street Photography .

Returning after an enjoyable festive break with a large audience, the 2nd Open Competition was judged. Taking on the task was Swansea based Mike Clatworthy who is a member of 3 West Glamorgan camera clubs as well as being a WPF qualified judge.

There was a wide range of subject matter in both sections including our feathered friends, flowers, people, sport and landscapes. Mike commented that the standard of the wildlife photography was particularly good.

In the print section Mike had 17 entries to look at . He gave constructive comments how a photo could be enhanced . With 5 entries scoring 19 or 20 the final decision was in 1st place with 20 points “ The Next Wave” by Gary Mayhew. A super sea and surfer scape which would grace any home. In 2nd place with “Woodpecker eating” was Charlie Kidd scoring 20 points . Charlie Kidd also attained 3rd place with “ Portrait of a Sparrowhawk” scoring 20 .
In the DPI section there were 16 entries, again with 5 entries scoring 19 or 20. In top spot was Dave Bolton with “Puffin Takeoff’ . A first time top score for Melanie . “Flying High” by Jan Sullivan scored 19 and was given the 3rd spot . Mike gave Neil Thomas’s “Puffin Landing” a highly commended.
