SHOW & TELL

TENBY CAMERA CLUB NEWSLETTER

On the 19th October Tenby Camera Club held a ‘Show & Tell ’ evening . During the first part of the evening Gill MacKay, an experienced Tenby member, showed us about 20 of her images taken over the last few years . Most of them have done very well in internal & external competitions , as well as in UK & International salons . Gill explained how she approached the shot, which settings were used & what post processing was needed. She specialises in Street photography capturing those special moments of people and their expressions & emotions. Gill showed us how important light is to give the image character and life. Gill emphasised that a small compact camera can capture those moments too. A difficult field of photography indeed .

After refreshments another Tenby member Mike Cullis took on the task of ‘Show & Tell’ . Mike is a very successful photographer having exhibited locally , had articles published in magazines & was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife photographer of the year. He has also been photographer of the Year in Tenby Camera Club numerous times.

His presentation took the form of showing the audience 20 prints that he will be submitting for judging and assessment to attain the accolade of MPAGB . This is to be a Master of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain , which is the highest level of amateur photography in the UK.
Mike explained how the assessment works. The five judges look at the image for about 6 seconds , so the image must have huge immediate impact. Scoring is out of 25 & to get a chance of attaining the MPAGB an average mark of 22.5 on the images must be achieved.
Talking through his images we were treated to a fabulous selection of prints. Wildlife ,sport & landscape featured strongly , taken in the UK and around the world , Mike having travelled to Florida, Namibia, the Arctic & The Masai Mara in Kenya. His love of wildlife shone through, it is wonderful seeing animals & birds naturally in the wild. Many of the shots were taken under difficult situations, low light for instance and in bumpy jeeps !
Camera details were discussed giving help to newer photographers.

The club audience showed their appreciation to both Mike & Gill for taking the time to inspire fellow members, which is so important for confidence.

The next meeting on the 26th October is Pixel Twisting with Mark Mumford who Specialises in creating wonderful surreal digital images using only photographs and Photoshop manipulation.
