ROB MITCHELL

TENBY CAMERA CLUB NEWS

On Thursday the 20th September Tenby Camera Club welcomed Rob Mitchell who had travelled down from Neath in awful weather. The weather also affected the audience numbers but Rob’s talk ‘A can of worms’ was worth the journey.

Rob graduated from the Swansea Metropolitan University with a masters degree in photography in 2007. He has taught photography for many years and is an experienced judge & presenter with the WPF. He certainly knows his craft & how to teach it.

The subject matter was all about the question discussed many times….. ‘Is Photography Art?’ Should Photography be of a similar standing to painting, sculpture or even performance?

Rob involved the audience by asking opinions and questions. He illustrated how photography is a mix of science and art. Photography can make you feel …..making it an art. The equipment and the processing is a science & can lead to being artful. In processing, changes in composition, colours, exposure and sharpening can change an ordinary image into an artful interesting photo.

It is good to have a personal project which can inspire both yourself & your viewer. Be mindful of your surroundings when on a photoshoot, listen & look. Think of what you want to achieve, the story to pass on to your viewer. Be creative.

To summarise if your work invokes an emotion then it is art. If it is just a record shot then probably not !

Next week is a “biggie”. It is our annual 8 - way battle !!! Eight Camera Clubs from South Wales compete to win this interclub battle. Tenby is joined by Cardigan, Carmarthen, Newquay, Kidwelly, Llanelli, Towy Valley and Trostre, each submitting 10 images. These 80 photos will be critiqued & scored by WPF judge Gareth Martin. An interesting evening for sure.
