Panels Competition

Roy Thomas DPAGB Hon. FWPF and President of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PABG) was the guest judge at the camera club meeting on the 24th November. The Chairman Neil Thomas thanked Roy for stepping in at short notice to judge the clubs panel competition.

Before the judging began, Roy explained that the construction of a successful print panel is no easy task, and that each application for accreditation will be assessed as a complete print panel or digital sequence and not as individual pieces of work. Assessors are looking for photographic or technical quality, consistency, individuality, sincerity and a sensitive presentation. He pointed out that the RPS requirement for panel submission varies significantly to the WPF requirements.

There were seven print panels to be judged and as ever Roy gave a fair and constructive critique. He remarked on the quality of some printing, good panel constructions, he gave the author of some panels the advice that there was perhaps a weak image that did not fit well with the remaining four. On several of the panels he commented that with a little work they would be up to AWPF accreditation standard. The overall print panel winner was Charlie Kidd with his panel titled ‘Woody Woodpecker’ gaining 20 points in second place also with 20 points was Gill McKay with her panel titled ‘Finished’ and in third place with 18 points Mike Cullis with his panel titled ‘The Futility of War’.

Following refreshments Roy judged eleven digital panels, here each individual image was displayed and then finally as a panel. Once again comments were made in particular to the sharpness and colour of the images displayed, the positions were reversed in this digital section with Gill McKay ‘Mud’ being awarded 20 points and the winner. Roy commented that these were very sharp candid images, well lit, capturing a moment in time with even tones throughout, every thing a panel could have. Second place was awarded to Charlie Kidd, 19 points with his panel titled ‘Fishing’, and in third place with 18 points, Ali Rees with her panel title ‘German Short Haired Pointer’.

Trophies to the winners were presented by Roy Thomas and congratulations were extended to all photographers who had submitted panels.
