NICK JENKINS & PAIR OF ACES COMP
TENBY CAMERA CLUB NEWS
Tenby Camera Club members gave a warm welcome to returning speaker & judge Nick Jenkins, AWPF, ARPS. Nick is a professional photographer based in South Wales widely published in outdoor photography as well as being an experienced WPF judge . He runs workshops specialising in landscape photography.
His talk ,“ My journey through landscape” was captivating. Members were treated to a tour of the UK , as well as a dip into Iceland ! Images from throughout Wales and beyond to National Parks, coast, mountains and gently rolling hills were admired as well as discussed.. Certainly we were made to feel very thankful to live in the UK with it’s diverse landscapes which Nick had captured with such skill.
Nick asked members why some images worked & maybe how some could be improved by a change of position to take the shot for example. It was good to see landscapes in portrait mode, in black & white, with extreme simplicity or full of colour.
As always we were reminded that the sunrise & sunset times give stunning light . Nick showed us with several photos that even if the day doesn’t look too promising , nature can suddenly produce that moment when the view can come alive even just for a wistful moment. Those are the shots which can be special. Nick encouraged us to not to take the “obvious” picture, look for a different angle , experiment using longer length lenses and be prepared to wait for that sky to transform with storm clouds roaring in …..but be prepared to run or get wet !
On Saturday the 17th February The WPF held it’s annual “Aces” competition , and it was here in Pembrokeshire ! The Regency Hall in Saundersfoot was an excellent location for Tenby Camera Club to support and enter this competition, normally having to travel some distances.
The competition comprised two sections, “The Ace of Clubs” for digital entries and “Ace of Prints” for prints. There were several rounds of marking from 3 highly qualified judges , Adrian Lines MPAGB,FBPE,EFIAP,ARPS, Jane Lines MPAGB,BPE5, LRPS and Ralph Snook ARPS,EFIAP.
Eight South Wales Clubs hotly competed for top marks, with images being selected on the day & throughout the competition from a bank of images provided by club members.
In the Ace of Prints Tenby scored well throughout but were overtaken by the skilled club “Inn Focus “ to be second with 191 points to their 210 out of 225. However, three Tenby members were given extra recognition with Neil Thomas getting a Highly Commended Award with his image “ Cuckoo with grub” , Al Rees, Best Action with “ The Low Jumper” and Gill MacKay with Best Still Life for “ The Rose” .
In “The Ace of Clubs” for digital images, Tenby again fought hard but succumbed eventually to “Inn Focus” to get second place with 241 points to their 250.Tenby member Paul Richards was awarded Best Nature with “Rush for the Worm”
Tenby now qualify for representing Wales and the WPF in a UK wide competition to be held in Blackburn for the prints and Warwick for digital.
Tenby’s External Club Secretary , Neil Thomas did an excellent job with skill & responsibility, organising the club entries both in advance and during competition. He was helped and supported with the task by Gill & Alistair MacKay .
Next week 22nd February , we have a Water Droplets Workshop with Allan Squires . Check out Tenby Camera Club’s website !
