Graham Harris Presentation

A welcome return on Thursday 27th April to Graham Harries whose work ranges from personnel projects, weddings, portraits and live music gigs. He is also an active member of the Llanelli Photographic Society.

Graham’s talk and demonstrations were on painting with light. In the first part of his talk he explained to members that light is the raw ingredient of all images and the single most important tool available to photographers. Learning how to control light, whether it’s natural or artificial, is the most effective way of improving your shots. He explained his use of speed lights, long shutter speeds and high ISO with flash and other artificial light and it is not the time of day that affects quality, it’s modifiers, such as bare flash from an uncovered source produces hard light, while a flash with diffuser such as a soft box produces soft light.

Following a short break, club members went outside to experiment with light sources, such as wire wool sprayed with WD40 and held in a typical household whisk, lit and swirled around. He also introduced members to his pixel stick which again is a light source of LED lights. To many of our members this was a new concept to add to their photography knowledge.

Many thanks was given to Graham for his presentation ‘Painting with Light’, which was enjoyed by all. This excellent evening brought our winter programme to a close.
