Alun Richardson

Thursday 26th January the Tenby and District Camera Club spent an evening in the presence of Alun Richardson who, besides being a club member, is also a professional photographer, writer and mountain guide. Aluns talk to the members was about the 2016 year he spent in beautiful wild places often working in sub zero temperatures. January and February much of his time is spent in Scotland where he leads parties on ice walking expeditions, March skiing, May France and Spain, June, July and September in the Alps and most of the remaining year was spent in Nepal and the Himalaya where he is training with the Ghurkha Regiment for the accent of Everest in 2017. Alun has been selected to be the parties official photographer.

To accompany the images Alun talked about his business and using the Stock Library, his writing for Trek and Mountain Magazines and various articles for the Great British Days Magazine. He explained the equipment he carries, much of which was on display for members to see, from the rucksack’s, camera bodies and lenses to clothing, boots, crampons, ice axes and ropes.

Alun gave members advice on coping with the cold and condensation in camera bodies and lenses, hints and tips on battery usage and about rotation of the batteries in cold weather. The weather is always an issue from rain, snow, sleet and dust so always have plenty of wipe cloths in your pockets.

We were shown an Audio Visual presentation of Ski-Mountaineering with a local doctor who is a personal friend, showing beautiful images of down hill skiing and snow walking.

To complete his talk we were shown images of Everest and life in Kathmandu where often Alun would wander of the main streets and capture the real life of the Nepalese people.

Vice Chairman Dave Marriot thanked Alun on behalf of the club for his interesting and informative talk.
