ALLAN SQUIRES

TENBY CAMERA CLUB NEWS

Talented photographer Allan Squires, FDPS,AWPF, travelled to Tenby Camera Club from Pontypridd on Thursday evening, 22nd February. A member of Gywnfa Camera Club, Allan has a vast experience in photography. He specialises in macro photography & his talk covered two very different aspects of that field.

“It’s a Small World” was the first section, with a slideshow of a wide range of insect images. Advice was given on focus distances, camera settings and lighting. Certainly patience is essential with many images having to be discarded to get get the one you can be proud of. There were many in the slideshow which members were impressed with & wishing they had taken! Allan said you can take many of this type of image in your own garden, especially if there is a pool. Observation is useful in advance to watch behaviour of dragonflies, butterflies, wasps & bees for instance. Early morning shots can often produce the best images.

After a tea break, Allan cranked up a gear to demonstrate and talk about his “Microdroplet photography.” A very unique class of imagery , Allan has developed over the years equipment to help produce these photographs. Allan takes photographs of the droplets, for instance of milk, often coloured, being electronically released and linked to the flash & camera to get the shot.

Beautiful images of coloured “crowns” were shown and then explained….. how & why!
For instance, timings , materials to aid reflections, viscosity, and other liquids that can be used. Acrylic paints produce wonderful and unusual shapes which Allan called Paint Sculptures. We were then very impressed with how he could link droplets on a latex balloon surface to bass sounds produced with his computer for quirky results. Washers placed carefully to produce “flowers”, air cannons ……not your “normal” camera jargon!

Allan has a remarkable skill which we were lucky enough to have shared with him, if only for one evening. His extraordinary talent and flair shone through, and we at Tenby Camera Club can’t wait for a future practical session.

Next week on the 1st March (weather permitting!) we have the judging of the Mono competition.
Guests always welcome.
