31st October: Presentation by John Archer Thompson
What an interesting presentation! For their 31st October evening, Tenby & District Camera Club welcomed John Archer Thompson. He shared his local knowledge of the coastal geology of Pembrokeshire, its history, myths and legends with super photography. John is a freelance coastal ecologist, tutor, writer and photographer. This shone through with his knowledge of the rock structures of the Pembrokeshire coast laced with Welsh folklore in his commentary.
John’s talk began with a simple explanation of the geology of Pembrokeshire, the timescales and how the coast and land developed in the past. The landscape is ancient with nearly all the rocks underlying its land surface formed before the end of the Carboniferous period some 290 million years ago. The oldest date back 600 million years. North Pembrokeshire is really old and the south much younger. We were taken on a journey from the Northern coast down to St Brides. The next section to the south coast will be in John’s next talk in February.
Visiting Strumble, Porthgain, St.David’s, Porthclais, Solva and Newgale we were shown excellent landscape photography taken in stunning light conditions. John explained the geology of this journey from the rare maritime heathlands to glacial river valleys and much more.
Information on farming, hedgerows, lichens, building materials, new sea technology, tides and settlements provided extra interest .
John was warmly thanked and we look forward to his next presentation early next year.
A Halloween raffle, organised by Ali Rees, was a great success. Thank you Ali for your hard work. Many thanks to everyone who purchased tickets and congratulations to Jan Sullivan who was the winner of the fabulous prize. Many thanks to everyone who play a part in making the evening a success.

We welcomed Allen back to Tenby Camera Club tonight . He is a popular speaker with stunning skills as photographer, both technically and artistically. Allen divided the evening into 4 separate presentations with the link between them being an extremely high standard of photography.
The first section was on the wildlife and landscapes of Iceland, moving through the seasons. Birds in their breeding colours, pink foot geese, turnstones, eider, golden plover and red throated divers to name just a few. Seals and arctic fox too. Waterfalls, beaches and mountains, lakes, churches and flowers through the seasons. And then there were the Northern lights, sunrises and sunsets. Autumn colours, snow, heavy seas and mirror lakes were all featured. Just stunning work, capturing the essence of Iceland.
Part 2 was a short appreciation of Preserved Steam Trains. Allen explained good places to visit to see the trains with full steam . The images were taken over a long period of time, most not digital including colour slides and film. Advice was given on times to take the most atmospheric shots, especially at nighttime. We were taken on a journey from Didcot to Seven Valley Railway , Scotland, Newport and Devon.
After a break, Allen demonstrated and talked about Drone Photography. He had 2 drones for us to look at and he advised on regulations as a drone photographer. There was a lot of interest and questions on this subject . An AV show of drone images was shown, giving a completely different viewpoint of popular locations. Castles, bridges, lakes and industrial areas were shown.
The last section was an AV with commentary from Allen on Starry Landscapes with wonderful photos of the milky way, star groups , star trails and meteor showers, Photos taken in the moonlight were beautiful.
