Creative Competition

A welcome return to the club on Thursday 2nd February was made by Dennis Russ AWPF, AFIAP, CPAGB and BPEI. Dennis is a member of Swansea Camera Club and a regular judge on the WPF circuit. Many of Dennis’s own images have gained acceptances and awards in both International and Welsh Salon photography competitions.

Dennis admitted that being asked to judge the creative competition was a daunting task as his own creative skills were limited.

With creative photography, its getting creative with colour, impact, letting your imagination run wild, arranging subjects according to hue and shape, the evenings images had all of these.

Dennis judged the 16 print images with his own sense of humour and his marking showed how good many of the images were, 5 images were highly commended with marks of 18 and 19 while the first place awarded to Charlie Kidd and his ‘Sparrow Hawk Oil Paint Effect’ was given 20 points, in 2nd place ‘Support Call’ by Gary Mayhew and 3rd place ‘Robins Verse’ by Cheryl Hewitt.

Following the refreshment break Dennis gave his critique to 15 digital images once again the scoring showed the quality of images submitted with again 5 images being highly commended and the top 3 images all gaining 20 marks. In 3rd place with ‘Catch a Falling Star’ was Gill MacKay, 2nd place with ‘Together’ was Cheryl Hewitt and 1st place with ‘Warming my Bones’ Roy Packer.

Dennis presented the awards to Charlie Kidd and in Roy Packer’s absence the Vice Chairman Dave Marriott received the trophy for Roy Packer.
